Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge was admitted to the hospital with Hyperemesis gravidarum – extreme morning sickness, a serious condition in pregnancy. While it is often resistant to conservative treatments, medical hypnosis is a well-documented alternative treatment.
Eighty percent of pregnant women experience morning sickness. According to the Tripler Regional Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, medical hypnosis should be considered as a adjunctive treatment option for women with both Hyperemesis gravidarum and those with common morning sickness. Women using hypnosis would enjoy a more comfortable pregnancy and healthier fetal development. Addressing the nausea early could prevent cases that might otherwise proceed to full-blown hyperemesis gravidarum.
Although the term indicates that the nausea only happens in the morning, for many pregnant women it can appear at any time during the day or, in more severe cases, last all day. It is usually a short term condition, ending around the 12th week of pregnancy. However, a few unfortunate women suffer long after their 12th week.
Using a combination of hypnosis and energy therapy such as the Emotional Freedom Techniques can alleviate the nausea as soon as it appears, putting the patient back in control of her body.
Hypnosis has also been proven effective in raising the pain threshold during childbirth and shortening the overall length of time required for the birth process.
